About Random Nr's Maths Question Generator
The maths question generator builds random arithmetic questions for practice and worksheets, in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or a mixed set. Set the largest number to control the difficulty and how many questions you want, and Random Nr produces a fresh sheet every time, with the answers shown or hidden so the same tool makes both the worksheet and the answer key.
How to set the difficulty level
The largest number field sets the ceiling the questions draw from, which is how you match a sheet to a stage of learning. These are useful reference points.
| Largest number | Suits | Example question |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | first number bonds and tables | 7 + 4 |
| 12 | times tables to twelve | 8 x 6 |
| 20 | early addition and subtraction | 17 - 9 |
| 100 | two digit arithmetic | 63 + 28 |
| 1000 | column methods | 742 - 375 |
Start low and raise the ceiling as the sums get easier, so the sheet keeps pace with the class rather than staying at one level.
How each math operation is generated
Random numbers alone would throw up negative answers and awkward remainders, so each operation is shaped to stay suitable for practice.
| Operation | How it is built | So you never get |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | two numbers up to the level | nothing to avoid |
| Subtraction | the larger number is put first | a negative answer |
| Multiplication | two numbers up to the level | nothing to avoid |
| Division | built backwards from a whole answer | a remainder |
Mixed mode picks one of the four at random for every question, so a single sheet can rehearse all of them at once.
How to make worksheets and answer keys
Leave answers hidden and copy or export the questions for a printable worksheet with blanks. Tick show answers to produce the matching key. The CSV export has a question column and an answer column, which drops straight into a spreadsheet or a mail merge. For a grid of random digits to practise place value see the random number table, and for sequences to skip count with, the number list generator.

Frequently asked questions
What questions can it make
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, or a mixed set that draws from all four operations.
How do I set the difficulty
Use the largest number field. A larger value produces harder sums, so 12 suits early practice and 100 stretches it further.
Do subtraction and division come out clean
Yes. Subtraction never goes below zero, and division is built from a whole number answer, so there are no negatives or remainders.
Can I hide the answers
Yes. Leave show answers off for a worksheet, or tick it to reveal the answer key.
Is it free
Yes, free and with no sign up. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter leaves your device.
