About Random Nr's Roman Numeral Generator
The random Roman numeral generator draws random numbers and writes them as Roman numerals, with the ordinary value shown alongside. Set your range, generate, and Random Nr shows both the numeral and the number it stands for, which is a neat way to practise reading numerals, set puzzles or pick a random figure with a bit of style.
The seven Roman numeral symbols
Roman numerals are built from just seven letters, each a fixed value. Everything from 1 to 3999 is spelled out by combining them.
| Symbol | Value |
|---|---|
| I | 1 |
| V | 5 |
| X | 10 |
| L | 50 |
| C | 100 |
| D | 500 |
| M | 1000 |
There is no symbol for zero, and no single letter beyond 1000, which is why the standard system stops at 3999, written MMMCMXCIX.
Why four is IV, not IIII
Roman numerals use a subtraction rule to avoid four of the same letter in a row. A smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted, so IV is five minus one, and IX is ten minus one. The same gives XL for 40, XC for 90, CD for 400 and CM for 900.
| Number | Numeral | How it is built |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | IV | 5 minus 1 |
| 9 | IX | 10 minus 1 |
| 40 | XL | 50 minus 10 |
| 90 | XC | 100 minus 10 |
| 2024 | MMXXIV | 1000 plus 1000 plus 10 plus 10 plus 4 |
This generator always uses the shortest correct form, so it writes IV rather than the older IIII sometimes seen on clock faces.
Where Roman numerals are used today
Roman numerals still name kings and popes, mark book chapters and film sequels, date buildings and monuments, and number the Super Bowl. A random numeral is handy for teaching the system or picking one for a title. This page shows the plain value beside every numeral so both are clear at once.
